1 Peter 5:10 (AMP) 10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be].
Hello, dear friend! I’m Pastor Sent, and I’m delighted to have you join me in exploring the powerful message found in 1 Peter 5:10. As we journey through this devotion, my prayer is that you’ll experience hope, encouragement, and guidance in your walk with Christ.
Background on 1 Peter
Before we delve into the verse, let’s take a moment to understand its context. The Apostle Peter, one of Jesus’ closest followers, authored this letter to encourage and instruct Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor, who were facing various trials and hardships.
Why men leave “perfect” women: what EVERY woman needs to know. His Secret Obsession.
The purpose of this letter is crucial for all of us, as we too face trials and difficulties in our lives. We can find great wisdom and strength in the timeless teachings found in this sacred text.
The Suffering of Believers

A. The nature of suffering in the Christian life
Suffering is an unfortunate reality that we all face at some point in our lives. However, the Bible teaches us that it is temporary and serves a greater purpose.
In 2 Corinthians 4:17 (AMP), we read, “For our momentary, light distress [this passing trouble] is producing for us an eternal weight of glory [a fullness] beyond all measure [surpassing all comparisons, a transcendent splendor and an endless blessedness]!” This verse reminds us that our present suffering is brief compared to the eternal glory that awaits us.
Furthermore, God allows suffering for our growth and refinement. James 1:2-4 (AMP) states, “Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing.”
Thus, our trials can lead to spiritual growth when we trust in God’s purpose.
The role of suffering in the lives of the apostles
Peter and the other apostles faced many trials and persecutions throughout their ministries. Acts 5:41 (AMP) recounts their response to suffering, “Then they left the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame and be dishonored on behalf of His name.”
Their resilience and faith, even in the face of suffering, serve as powerful examples for us today.
Early Christians were no strangers to suffering either. In Acts 8:1 (AMP), we learn that “On that day a great and relentless persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem…”
Despite these challenges, the early believers remained steadfast in their faith, which allowed the gospel message to spread throughout the world.
C. Application: How to respond to suffering and trials
In the midst of suffering, it’s essential to keep our focus on God. Hebrews 12:2 (AMP) urges us, “looking away from all that will distract us and focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity].”
By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we can find the strength to persevere through our trials.
Trusting in God’s ultimate purpose helps us find hope even in the darkest of times. Romans 8:28 (AMP) assures us, “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”
By trusting in God’s plan and promises, we can weather the storms of life and come out stronger on the other side.
The Promise of Restoration and Establishment
A. The process of being made complete, confirmed, strengthened, and established
God is continually at work in our lives, sanctifying and maturing us. Philippians 1:6 (AMP) says, “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].” This ongoing process refines and shapes us into the image of Christ.
The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our spiritual growth. In John 14:26 (AMP), Jesus assures us, “But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.” The Holy Spirit guides, empowers, and supports us on our journey of faith.
B. The ultimate goal: eternal glory in Christ
Our hope and assurance lie in the eternal glory we will experience in Christ. 1 Peter 1:3-4 (AMP) says, “Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant and boundless mercy has caused us to be born again [that is, to be reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] to an ever-living hope and confident assurance through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance which is imperishable [beyond the reach of change] and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven for you.”
The resurrection and the promise of a new creation (Revelation 21:4) provide us with hope and strength to persevere through trials and hardships, knowing that our current struggles will be eclipsed by the eternal joy and glory that await us in Christ.
C. Application: Living in light of our future glory
To live in light of our future glory, we must maintain an eternal perspective, focusing on the unending joy that awaits us. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (AMP) reminds us, “For our momentary, light distress [this passing trouble] is producing for us an eternal weight of glory [a fullness] beyond all measure [surpassing all comparisons, a transcendent splendor and an endless blessedness]! So we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are unseen; for the things which are visible are temporal [just brief and fleeting], but the things which are invisible are everlasting and imperishable.”
By encouraging one another in the faith (Hebrews 10:24-25), we can build each other up and find the strength to persevere through trials and challenges. When we remember that our present sufferings are only temporary compared to the eternal joy and glory that await us in Christ, we can press forward with confidence and hope.
1 Peter 5:10 Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today to lift up our dear friend who is going through a challenging time. You know their struggles, whether it’s sickness, the loss of a job, stress, emotional pain, a difficult marriage, or any other burden that is weighing heavily on their heart. We know that Your Word promises hope, encouragement, and guidance in times like these, and we trust in Your love and power to intervene in their life.
Lord, we ask that You surround them with Your comforting presence and remind them that You are in control. Strengthen their faith and help them to see Your hand at work, even in the midst of their trials. Grant them the grace to endure and persevere, knowing that You are molding and refining them through these hardships.
Fill them with Your peace that surpasses understanding, and provide them with the wisdom and courage to navigate these difficult circumstances. We pray that they will experience Your love and care in tangible ways and that You will bring people into their lives to support, uplift, and encourage them.
In all things, may they find refuge in Your unchanging promises and come to know that their present sufferings are only temporary compared to the eternal joy and glory that await them in Christ. We thank You for Your faithfulness, and we ask all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
